ASSOCIATE

We are a small, close-working team of landscape experts. What sets our team apart from other firms is the deep practical knowledge of how great spaces and plantings are installed and nurtured. When we first visit a site, we seek out the native or cultural remnants that are the clues to the kind of ecological trajectory the site can sustain. During design, we are constantly looking at material or plant availability to make sure our designs are feasible. Our obsessive focus on implementation elevates our work. Too often nature-inspired designs fail because they don't understand the technical complexities of design & management. We put our hands in the soil, know the growers by name, touch every plant, and advocate for quality every step of the way.

We believe the process of making landscapes is as important as design.

We love when plans and renderings become real plantings in the field. No matter how well thought through a design, we adapt every project to the realities of the field. Whether it is seeing a superior selection at a nursery, smoothing grading to accommodate drainage, or adjusting plant layout to the subtleties of light exposure, we are present on site to advocate for quality during implementation. We work side by side with installers, teaching crews best ways for planting plugs, containers, bulbs, or ball and burlapped woodies. Our collaborators—architects, land managers, clients, and foremen—are essential to this process and ultimately become friends. Design and installation are just the start of the relationship, as we believe long term management is the key to guiding successful landscapes.

How the soil is prepared, where our plants are sourced, how materials are stored, what our clients approve, and why alternative methods are needed are all critical questions that we have specific answers for. What is drawn on a sheet of paper is just the beginning. Adapting a design to a real site requires years of experience, knowledge of soils and plant systems, and an intuitive sense of what needs to be adjusted to feel right. We bring this process-focused approach to every project.
